Building A Better Future, One Farm At A Time

In the past few decades, surface runoff pollution has become the number one environmental threat to life in the Chesapeake Bay. With each rain fall, excess fertilizer is washed into the bay and causes a chain reaction which affects all life.

First a massive algae bloom occurs which uses up all the available oxygen and blocks the sunlight from reaching the bottom. This creates a dead zone that is directly responsible for the massive fish kills and the disappearance of underwater aquatic vegetation. Next, when the algae dies, it blankets the bottom smothering our beloved oysters, crabs and other benthic creatures. This is a man made problem and its time to step up to the plate.

Our Mission

Greens Farms Inc is determined to reduce the levels of nitrogen and phosphorus that enter the bay through runoff. We work with local farmers and home owners through out the watershed teaching a form of environmental remediation known as Mycoremediation. We are proving that a waste byproduct from the mushroom industry can be used in retention ponds, drainage ditches and rain gardens to directly achieve this goal at the source of the pollution.

We believe in today’s world, zero is simply not enough.

Our systems utilize technology in conjunction with natural cycles that not only eliminate our carbon footprint, but reduce yours as well

Greens Farms Inc. is actively researching the reduction of organic waste streams by converting them into a soil amendments which will help farms and local gardens flourish!

The Power Of The Mushroom

Mushrooms have long since been exploited by humans as a food source. They are delicious and nutritious.  It’s only been recently that we began to look at what they do in nature.

Scientists have proven that mushrooms:

  • have the ability to absorb ten times their weight in water.

  • have an incredible tinsel strength that holds soils together preventing erosion

  • remove nitrogen and phosphorus from their environment at a rapid rate

  • compete with and eliminate bacterial colonies such as Ecoli and Salmonella

  • break down complex hydrocarbons ~ certain mushrooms are used to clean oil spills

  • turn radiation into sugar. Fungi found in Chernobyl is being studied on the I.S.S. for its ability's to digest radiation in hopes that it will shield future astronauts in space.

  • will save the bees~ bees harvest and eat mycelium because it contains antibodies they can’t produce. This strengthens their immune system and is being used to fight colony collapse disorder. It’s not just the bees.

  • have strong immunology and medicinal benefits. They can boost your immune system, increase blood circulation to the brain improving memory, and some mushrooms are being used along side chemotherapy with great success in fighting cancer.
